Digital Signage

Digital signage is a term used to describe how plasma display panels (PDPs), liquid crystal displays (LCDs), computer monitors, projectors and normal televisions are used to replace and enhance traditional signs.

What are the advantages?

The advantages of digital signage include the rapid ability to update content, and the ability to deliver specific messages to specific audiences in specific locations.

What should I Look for?

There are many products on the market today, including plasma/LCD screens with built in computers, hard drives and scheduling software.  Information and content can be sent to these screens over a network and therefore, providing the network has internet access can be updated from anywhere in the world. The biggest down side of this type of product is the computer is built in, if the screen fails you will need to buy another with a built-in device. Also, there is no means of upgrading the screen. Another option is a computer running a software package that has the ability to schedule images at specific times of the day. These packages vary in functionality from something that has a single zone on the screen to multiple zones for carrying different content. The signal from this computer could be distributed to several screens. However, this kind of solution does have a limited capability and updating options.

Have a look at the BMW case study and some images of where digital signage can be used.
